Ledra Street Check Point in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus
The Ledra Street checkpoint was a crossing point between the Greek Cypriot-controlled southern part of Nicosia and the Turkish Cypriot-controlled northern part of the city. It was located on Ledra Street, a main thoroughfare in Nicosia, and was one of the most important crossing points in the city. The checkpoint was established in 1964, shortly after the outbreak of intercommunal violence on the island, and remained in operation until it was finally dismantled in 2008 as part of the ongoing peace process between the two sides.
The Ledra Street checkpoint was a symbol of the division of the island and the ongoing conflict between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. It was also a major inconvenience for residents of Nicosia, as it added significant time and bureaucracy to travel within the city. The checkpoint's demolition in 2008 was seen as a significant step towards the reunification of Cyprus and the normalization of relations between the two communities.
