Is Northern Cyprus Turkish or Greek?
The status of Northern Cyprus is a matter of dispute between Turkey and the internationally recognized government of Cyprus, which is a member of the European Union.
In 1974, following a coup by Greek Cypriot nationalists supported by the Greek government, Turkey intervened and occupied the northern part of the island. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot community declared the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is recognized only by Turkey.
So, in short, Northern Cyprus is claimed by both Turkey and Cyprus, but it is currently under the control of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey.
